Tutu’s Fund for the Future

New Sponsorship Manager in Ethiopia

We are really pleased to announce the appointment of Firew Tilahun as our new Sponsorship Manager in Ethiopia. Firew set up our southern office in Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) about sixteen months ago and has been expertly steering and coordinating our activities within a dozen schools in Addis Ababa, Bishoftu, Adama (Nazret) and Asella since then. Ethiopia plans universal access to safe drinking water by 2015

The Water Resource Minister in Ethiopia has announced that the Government plans to expand the provision of clean, safe water and sanitation services, covering every inhabited area within the next five years. According to the minister, the safe water service coverage of the country has reached to 66.2 percent at present from a level of only 20 percent two decades ago. Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba are two of the world’s greatest athletes. The Ethiopian pair are among the finest sportsmen of their generation. Ethiopian Airlines flight ET409

On 25th January, an Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane with 90 people on board crashed into the Mediterranean Sea shortly after take-off from Beirut airport. Eyewitnesses said they saw a ball of fire in the sky before the Addis Ababa-bound Flight ET409, which had taken off in stormy weather, fell into the sea. No survivors were found. New toilets for Edeget Feleg Secondary

Edeget Feleg Secondary school in the centre of Gondar town provides Grade 9 and 10 education to 2,900 pupils. Their toilet facilities are basic, old and damaged. We are currently working with the school to fund a new toilet block made of solid blocks which will last well into the future – the new toilet block will reduce the spread of disease and subsequent illness amongst pupils, which in turn will improve the pupils’ attendance and resulting education. Enkutatash is the first day of the New Year in Ethiopia. It occurs on 11th September according to the Gregorian calendar, which is 1st Meskerem on the Ethiopian calendar.
