Our biggest ever book shipment!

By | Projects

Travelling some 6,000 miles, our largest book shipment to date recently arrived safely in Gondar, Ethiopia. The 20-foot-long container set sail five months earlier after a busy period of book collections, sorting and packing with the very generous support of our UK schools. On arrival in Ethiopia an energetic team of students helped unload and organise the 25,000 books and 12 computers, ready for distribution. This book shipment was able to support some 15 primary and secondary schools in the…

Active learning resources

By | Projects

At Link Ethiopia, we believe that schools are only as effective as the teaching inside them. In partnership with the local Teacher Training Centre in Gondar we have provided funds to enable the creation of three sizeable boxes of interesting classroom resources for rural schools. These resources include locally-made visual aids, games, mini-blackboards and other items which are typically difficult for rural teachers to gain access to. The Teacher Training Centre also provides training and support for the staff in…

Gondar schools get an exciting new shipment

By | Projects

Technology is becoming increasingly important in Ethiopian schools. The job market is starting to require applicants to have at least a basic level of computer literacy, but most schools are currently without the necessary technology and teaching experience. To help meet this growing need for computers, Link Ethiopia has organised several shipments of computers to schools in the Gondar region. A huge thanks to Brunel University, who provided us with our largest shipment by donating a massive 50 computers, which…

Kebele 16 Elementary’s new toilets

By | Projects

The Kebele 16 Elementary School, on the outskirts of Gondar town, caters for 1,800 pupils. For a number of years, the toilet facilities at the school were totally unsuitable for their pupils. Hygienic sanitation provision in schools is key to reducing the spread of disease amongst pupils. Sickness immediately impacts on school attendance and a young person’s education. Link Ethiopia worked in partnership with the local community to fund a new toilet block at Kebele 16, with eight toilets for…

Anchow Mikael Elementary

By | Projects

At Anchow Mikael Elementary School, in a rural community in the north of Ethiopia, the pupils were taught under temporary shelters until very recently. These were made of branches and sticks which washed away with heavy rainstorms, which are common in this region during July and August. Link Ethiopia worked with the local community to enable them to build this impressive double classroom and the local young people are now enjoying year-round education! You can help us support schools like…

Link Ethiopia football team in the Gondar finals!

By | Sports

Each summer, when the schools are closed, there’s a football tournament held in Gondar town. For the first time ever we have entered our own Link Ethiopia team, made up of 15 energetic under 13’s from some of our link schools. 31 other teams also joined the tournament and, after some serious training sessions, our Link Ethiopia sponsored team joined with their counterparts at the opening ceremony in Gondar’s Meskal Square in mid-July. Our team has been fortunate to have…

Dosha Elementary School water and furniture

By | Water and sanitation

Back in October we introduced you to Dosha, an elementary school in Asella, a few hours drive south of Addis Ababa. At that time we were fundraising to provide the 1,100 children at the school with a clean drinking water supply and new desks in their classrooms. Well, we are pleased to bring you news that thanks to the generosity of numerous supporters, and especially our friends John and Sue, the pupils in this particularly poor neighbourhood are now able…

Computer and furniture shipment has arrived!

By | Projects

Quite some time ago we started planning for a large shipment of computers and classroom furniture to send to Ethiopia. Various donors, but in particular Halliford School, Pate’s Grammar School, Dr Challoner’s Grammar School and Queniborough Primary School have enabled this shipment to happen, alongside our partner charities, Digital Links and School Aid. Now, after what feels like a lifetime of logistical planning and bureaucracy, we are pleased that the computers and furniture have finally arrived, and we are just…

New toilets for Edeget Feleg Secondary

By | Projects

Edeget Feleg Secondary school in the centre of Gondar town provides Grade 9 and 10 education to 2,900 pupils. Their toilet facilities are basic, old and damaged. We are currently working with the school to fund a new toilet block made of solid blocks which will last well into the future – the new toilet block will reduce the spread of disease and subsequent illness amongst pupils, which in turn will improve the pupils’ attendance and resulting education. To help…
