How are we celebrating World Book Day?

By Libraries, books and literacy

Written by Shree Mandke This year, on 6th March, we will be celebrating World Book Day with some reflection and a hint of nostalgia, as we look back at some of the highlights of our work increasing access to books and libraries, and our work to improve literacy. 18 years have flown by. Here’s what we have been up to: Books became our lingua franca Way back in the mid to late 1990s, when Link Ethiopia was called GondarLink and when…

Alastair’s Trip – Making sure we make a difference

By Libraries, books and literacy

I’m nearing the conclusion of a stint with Link Ethiopia just shy of 3 months.  I’ve been very kindly sponsored by Integrate Hands, [singlepic id=503 w=320 h=240 float=right] a small post-conflict charity founded and run by Katinka Nicou. I’ve spent the majority of my time here sleeping, or involved in two long term projects, both education-based, a Libraries and Literacy project very directly related to education, and a project to increase female attendance at school with a broader background and impact….

Library And Literacy Project – Following up

By Libraries, books and literacy

In addition to the Sounds of English training, given by Sue in Gonder, and myself in Bishoftu, earlier this term, the librarian, director (headteacher) and a few teachers form each Library and Literacy Project school were given library training by SEDFA’s Mark Smith. This was a two day course that sought to make the best possible use of the school’s libraries.  From making sure they have appropriate facilities, displays and basic facilities for lending books to setting up the library…

The Sounds of English – Following up

By Libraries, books and literacy

[singlepic id=496 w=320 h=240 float=right]It’s all very well delivering a project or some training, but as discussed previously, we have to know if it works, and have to follow it up. Therefore after each delivery of the ‘Sounds of English’ course (four in total), we went to watch each teacher giving a lesson.  It allows us to check if the course teaches what it seeks to teach, modify the course for the next batch of teachers when it hasn’t been…

The Sounds of English

By Libraries, books and literacy

We spent our first week getting to grips with the projects, setting up the monitoring and a fair amount of that time translating, formatting, editing, printing, copying, hole-punching and binding some books to go in our project school libraries. These are very simple books in English and the local language that will allow children to read very basic stories and quickly compare English and local versions to grasp the meaning of English words. By the end of the week, we…

Measuring Success

By Libraries, books and literacy

Before starting any new intervention, we must measure whatever it is we’re trying to change.  Getting this baseline means we know the situation when we started and can see if there’s any improvement later on. After arriving in Gondar, before getting off to any of the schools, monitoring was therefore where we started work.  A version of the ‘Library and Literacy’ project has been run further south in Africa, where it was monitored by Mark Smith of SEDFA.  We inherited…

Dagoma Elementary Get Their Books!

By Libraries, books and literacy

Welcome to the Link Ethiopia Projects Blog! We are really excited here at Link Ethiopia to be able to tell you about a recent project that was completed at Dagoma Elementary School, located on the outskirts of the small farming village and community of Dagoma. Over 1,700 pupils attend the school, which has only 16 classrooms. A lack of finances and space led to a poor learning environment for the children.  Our wish was to provide better furniture, and a wider selection of books to increase…

World Book Day!

By Libraries, books and literacy

Today, March 7th, is World Book Day. A day in which books – even bad books – are celebrated throughout the world. It remains our mission to educate as many children in Ethiopia as we possibly can and so we must remember the importance of reading in its ability to teach; but also in its ability to provide fun. So pick up a book, turn the pages and get lost for a while in whatever story it is that is…
