Olympic message from our staff in Ethiopia

London 2012

While the world’s eyes are on the opening of the London 2012, we at Link Ethiopia’s Offices in Gondar and Bishoftu would like to express our delight at the hosting of this round of the Olympic by London. For Link Ethiopia’s team, whose half side operates in London and the other half here in Ethiopia, the curiosity and excitement is much higher for the London Olympic games.

Tirunesh Dibaba Beijing Games 2008

The Olympics has always held a special meaning for Ethiopians, especially with the outstanding performance of Ethiopian long-distance runners, covering an exceptional historic record of the events, beginning from Abebe Bikila in Rome to Kenenisa Bekele in Beijing, and Derartu Tulu in Barcelona to Tirunesh  Dibaba in Beijing. Ethiopians have enough reasons to eye London 2012 medals.

Since the discovery of the source of the Nile by James Bruce in 1768, the friendship between the people of Ethiopia and Great Britain has been remarkable, going up to present-day professional and technical support to Ethiopian children and youth. Several works of solidarity and friendship have been achieved as living memorials of cooperation between the two nations. It is obvious that most Ethiopians have a special place in their hearts for the people and country of England, it can be observed from our interactions with people from several walks of life. Link Ethiopia’s team is highly privileged to be part of the organizational effort that facilitates this solidarity between the people of the United Kingdom and Ethiopia.

On the verge of the opening of the London 2012 Olympics, our School Link program has been trying to strengthen this timely phenomenon through its Shared Learning Activities with their counterparts in Britain.  At the same time, we successfully completed Link Ethiopia’s Sports and Community Programme funded through the Hilden Charitable Trust project. This unique initiative brought the spirit of the Olympics to Ethiopia by providing several schools with sports kits, equipment and training for the students.

At this moment, we would like to express our best wishes for the opening of the London 2012 Olympics and its one month stay to be safe, ordered and enjoyable. We would also love to wish the best results for the Ethiopian and English Olympiad teams. May our work ensure and strengthen friendship between Ethiopia and England!
