Technology provision in Ethiopian schools is becoming increasingly important. The job market is starting to require applicants to have at least a basic level of computer literacy and the school environment is perfectly suited to providing such exposure, although most schools are currently without the necessary technology and teaching experience. Link Ethiopia is working to support the provision of computers and associated technology in schools, alongside computer training wherever possible.
Internet access is also gradually becoming a feature of urban life in Ethiopia with internet cafes springing up in most major towns. However these facilities are out of the financial reach of most families and young people in the surrounding areas and so Link Ethiopia is working with schools to enable internet provision on school sites, giving pupils access to the world’s information.
Here you can read about some of the technology based projects we support.
To help meet the growing need for computers in Ethiopia our charity has organised several shipments, large and small, of computers to schools in the Gondar region. The largest shipment was thanks to Brunel University who donated 50 computers which we shipped and distributed to a range of schools, from elementary to preparatory level.
These shipments have helped develop teacher and pupil computer literacy and support more general school administration.
Link Ethiopia has funded the equipment and installation costs necessary to provide an internet and email connection to the Fasiledes Secondary School in Gondar town. We are also supporting the running costs for the scheme for the first 6 months. Our aim is to roll this level of information access out into other schools in the area.
Link Ethiopia has also supported schools with technology equipment such as this heavy-duty printer at the only preparatory school in Gondar town. The machine has revolutionised the production of exam papers and other school paperwork and administration.
