For over ten years Link Ethiopia has been providing schools in Ethiopia with relevant text and reading books. In urban school situations many of the books previously available dated back to the 1960's and were unsuitable both in content and condition. In rural schools, books are uncommon and unaffordable for local communities, and yet they are no less important to the education of their young people.
Secondary schools in Ethiopia have a particular need for quality English books because their lessons are taught in English. The provision of books therefore has become an on-going project of Link Ethiopia, the supply of modern and attractively presented English books on all subjects.
Here you can find out about two of the projects we recently funded.
The Fasiledes Secondary School caters for about 3,200 students in the town of Gondar, northern Ethiopia. Half its pupils are in Grade 9, half in Grade 10 and students attend either in the morning shift or in the afternoon.
Until recently the school library consisted of a small collection of books in the corner of an old and dangerously unstable building (due to site subsidence).
Link Ethiopia worked with the local community to jointly fund a new library building suitable for the number of students at the school. We have also funded the furniture and fittings neccessary to hold the thousands of books the school now has after our recent book shipment!
Travelling some 6,000 miles, our largest book shipment to date recently arrived safely in Gondar, Ethiopia. The 20 foot long container had set sail five months earlier after a busy period of book collections, sorting and packing with the very generous support of our UK schools.
On arrival in Ethiopia an energetic team of students helped unload and organise the 25,000 books and 12 computers, ready for distribution.
This book shipment was able to support some 15 primary and secondary schools in the region, whose libraries have now been significantly enhanced!
