Education is a fundamental human right. It is a vital tool to empower people to break the cycle of poverty and take control of their lives. In rural Ethiopia, over half of all children do not have access to basic education.
There are many barriers to accessing education, the biggest one being a shortage of schools and classrooms. In rural areas children can often walk for hours to reach a school and what schools exist are often inadequate shelters that become unusable in the rainy season.
With demands on childrens time to help at home and the hidden cost of schooling, such as the cost of stationary and uniform, many children are still denied an education.
Link Ethiopia is working hard with communities to overcome these obstacles. Through a range of schemes, such as building classrooms, providing uniforms, books and stationary, we aim to give children a chance to make the most of their education. We even run a chicken project enabling families to pay for schooling costs by selling eggs from donated chickens!
