Classroom buildings only go part-way to creating an effective learning environment for pupils. Many classrooms in Ethiopia have no furniture, with the young people making do sitting on logs or stones throughout their school day. Besides comfort, this makes writing much harder and generally detracts from what would otherwise be a positive learning experience. Link Ethiopia works with schools both to improve current furniture stock and to supply new locally made desk and chair units.
Keep reading to see examples of how we are creating better learning environments.
The Fasiledes Preparatory School caters for pre-University pupils in the Gondar area and needed sturdy desks and chairs to cater for their 2,000 strong student population each day. Old wooden furniture had suffered over long use and was no longer suitable or indeed safe for students to use.
Working with the school Link Ethiopia has replaced the furniture in 6 classrooms with locally made durable metal desk and chair units.
Link Ethiopia is embarking on a large project in this elementary school on the outskirts of Gondar in northern Ethiopia. As well as building much needed classrooms we will be funding sturdy desk and chair units for five new and existing classrooms.
This will mean students will be able to study and learn in a much more comfortable environment.
