New classrooms are fundamental to increasing access to education. In rural schools, where land availability is plentiful, there is huge potential for school growth and yet it is typically these schools and their surrounding rural communities which struggle the most financially.
We work alongside local communities to replace temporary teaching shelters and build more sturdy classrooms. We partner with schools to enable them to continue their pupils' education all the way to Grade 8 (the highest Elementary school Grade).
Here you can find out about two of the projects we recently funded.
At Anchow Mikael Elementary School, in a rural community in the north or Ethiopia, the pupils were taught under temporary shelters until very recently. These were made of branches and sticks which washed away with every heavy rainstorm; common in this region during July and August.
Link Ethiopia worked with the local community to enable them to build this impressive double classroom and the local young people are now enjoying year-round education!
This growing school is over an hour’s walk from the nearest town, Azezo, in the north of Ethiopia. Link Ethiopia and the local community recently completed a joint project to build two new classrooms to expand the school to Grade 7.
The students completing Grade 6 would previously have either walked to the nearest school in Azezo or stopped going to school. This project will give each young person in the local community the opportunity to continue their education for another year.
You can help us support schools like Anchow Mikael and Kilil Rufael. A classroom in a rural school costs about £600 or $1,200 - why not make a donation towards a project like this, or get some friends to chip in and fund the entire project yourselves!
