Ethiopia

For many people, thoughts of Ethiopia conjure up visions of Live Aid and starving children. The reality couldn’t be more different! Ethiopia’s colourful, vibrant culture, wealth of natural beauty and warm, hospitable people make it one of Africa’s best kept secrets. A visit to Ethiopia is a chance to explore the amazing scenery of its national parks, delve into ancient ruins, learn to dance the Ethiopian way, behold colourful religious ceremonies, be a guest at a wedding and try exotic delicacies and world-famous coffee.

Where are the projects?

Keen students
You will usually be volunteering in schools in Gondar, a large town in the north of Ethiopia. It is a friendly town on a hillside with a pleasant climate and it is home to one of Ethiopia’s major universities. The town centre has modern amenities such as internet services and laundries, however, venture a little outside town and you will see rural Ethiopia as it has been for centuries.

What are the schools like?

The schools in which you will volunteer are generally very basic, often short of resources such as books, sports equipment and IT. For this reason, volunteers can make such a difference. The lack of equipment is more than made up for by the enthusiasm of Ethiopian students to learn!

Classroom discipline is very good because the young people are all keen to learn. One of the challenges of teaching in Ethiopia can be the boosting of pupil's confidence so that conversations flow without inhibition. But we have had many years of gap teaching experience and this will help you to make a real success of your time in Ethiopia. Your Ethiopian students will become good and lasting friends.

Accommodation

You will be accommodated in good standard accommodation near to your project, either with a host family or in an apartment, usually sharing with another volunteer. Living with a host family is an amazing way to get under the skin of this country. Ethiopians are renowned for their hospitality and you can be sure you will be treated like one of the family.
