Our work consists of three main elements.
We set up, support and help manage links between U.K. schools and schools in Northern Ethiopia, in both the primary and secondary sectors. The core value of our system of links is one of equal partnership and shared learning. By encouraging young people to communicate and work together, we aim to create a real awareness not only of the diversity that exists between them but also of their shared aims and ambitions in a global community. We fully support schools in every aspect of the link, encouraging them to engage in a range of joint learning activities, with the aim of building a successful, productive, long-term partnership. We offer three-month Gap Ethiopia teaching placements to pre-university students. Our volunteers are accommodated by local families and teach English Communication Skills at secondary school level. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to immerse themselves fully in a fascinating and vibrant culture, take on a variety of new challenges, make a difference to the lives of young Ethiopians and make many new friends! Ethiopians are famed for their hospitality and the many pairs of gap volunteer teachers who have taken part in the scheme over the last decade have all had a positive and unique experience. We believe our Gap Scheme is very reasonably priced compared to similar Gap Schemes. We do not charge exorbitant administration fees and accommodation is priced at the local rate. More details may be found in the Gap Teaching section of our website.
Many of the schools we work with in Ethiopia are severely under-resourced. We therefore aim to assist schools in identifying, implementing and managing projects to improve the quality of the schooling they offer. This may involve basic necessities such as clean running water, adequate classrooms, the training of teachers in computer skills, or the management of libraries in larger schools. We work with schools in both rural and urban areas and we strive to enable all of our schools to deliver suitable education for the needs of their community.
