Our history

Started at the beginning of 1996, Link Ethiopia was originally called GondarLink and was formed as the first full and official school link between an English and Ethiopian secondary school.

The base for our organisation in those early days was Dr. Challoner's Grammar School in Amersham in the south of England. In Ethiopia it was Gondar where we centred ourselves, the third largest town in Ethiopia and the ancient capital of the country with an interesting and colourful history.

We soon introduced ourselves to the Fasiledes Comprehensive Secondary School, the biggest state secondary school in Gondar, and everyone there seemed keen to encourage a link with Dr. Challoner's.

Everyone we met in Gondar impressed us with their warmth and their cheerfulness, despite meagre resources.

Thus Link Ethiopia started in a very limited and specific way. But it has grown, thrived and diversified hugely since those early days. It has always received a great deal of support. In Ethiopia, the Ministry of Education, the British Council and the British Embassy in Addis Ababa have encouraged and helped our development at all times, while in England both the Ethiopian Embassy in London and the Anglo-Ethiopian Society have given their constant enthusiasm and support.

Individuals have likewise been thoroughly generous in their encouragement, with our Presidents Richard and Rita Pankhurst heading the long list of supporters and enthusiasts.

We hope that you will be interested to explore the various parts of this very varied website in order to discover the many projects that we have undertaken or encouraged since that time. Do get in touch with us if you would like to help or encourage us further.
